Comprehensive Law against Violence towards Women

Overview


This law establishes a comprehensive legal framework for the prevention, sanction, and eradication of violence against women based on gender. It applies across both public and private spheres and aims to ensure:

  • Protection and support for victims

  • Access to justice

  • Coordination among state entities

  • Long-term cultural change to promote gender equality and non-discrimination


Scope of Gender-Based Violence (Article 6)

The law defines a broad range of violence against women, including:

  • Physical violence

  • Psychological violence

  • Sexual violence

  • Economic violence

  • Symbolic violence

  • Institutional violence

  • Political violence

  • Workplace violence

  • Gyneco-obstetric violence


Definitions of Specific Forms of Violence


Symbolic Violence
Defined as:

“Any communication or dissemination of messages, texts, sounds or images in any media or platform, whose purpose is to naturalize stereotypes that affect [women’s] dignity, justify or naturalize relationships of subordination, inequality or discrimination against women.”


Political Violence
Defined as:

“Any conduct of harassment, persecution, threats, or aggression, carried out directly or through third parties, that, based on her gender, causes harm or suffering to the woman, and that aims to undermine, hinder, or nullify the recognition, enjoyment, or exercise of her political rights and participation.”
